Asia Academy Of Music Arts & Sciences Launches

Posted 4th July 2011 by Alex Trup

I was excited to read about the formation of the Asia Academy of Music Arts & Sciences (AAMAS), Asia’s first-ever peer driven Academy established to honor and award excellence in the arts and sciences of music, and to foster collaboration between all sectors of the music industry across Asia and beyond. It sounds like an interesting association, that I could very well sign up for in the near future.

Headquartered in Singapore, AAMAS will operate across an expansive geography throughout Asia. AAMAS will interact, develop membership, and represent the interests of music industry professionals and students who practice or study in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, or Vietnam. The multi-national members of AAMAS, the industry networking and sharing, and the professional and academic initiatives of the Academy will help position Singapore as the hub for the Asia music industry.

AAMAS members may live anywhere in the world, but must professionally or academically be engaged in the music industry within Asia. Four classifications of membership to AAMAS are open to all those affiliated with the music industry: voting, professional, student and honorary. AAMAS, which has been in the development stages for over two years, launches today with nearly 3,000 members and growing. A Governing Board of approximately twenty will be named shortly. Currently the Pro Tem Board of Governors includes five names.

The Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) and Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) are in support of MusicDNA’s establishment in Singapore as a springboard to the music industry in Asia. AAMAS will create a platform for regional, as well as, global industry players to network and explore business opportunities in a collaborative environment with strong connectivity to the region.

AAMAS is an organization that will enhance the profile of practicing music professionals in Asia, including composers, producers, musicians, singers, engineers and technical support professionals throughout ASIA. AAMAS is uniquely positioned to serve as the nexus of expansion for the music industry in Asia. With the infrastructure of Singapore perfectly suited to serve as its hub, AAMAS will assist with the burgeoning need for sharing knowledge, be the trading post fostering the exchange of ideas and new business opportunities, and help guide the expansion of the industry across Asia.

AAMAS is in talks with The Peoples’ Republic of China State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) to encourage its music professionals and students alike to become members and contribute to the relevance and the future of AAMAS throughout the region.

Over the next six months AAMAS is inviting Asia music professionals to work with us to continue to evolve AAMAS into the most relevant organization for music professionals and students throughout Asia.

AAMAS Mission: Bring Asia’s music professionals together in a borderless realm to achieve the highest level of art and professionalism in music. Together, AAMAS and its members will define the Asian Music Industry – today and tomorrow.

Key objectives of AAMAS:

  • Unite music professionals who play a role in the Asia music business to form a peer driven society.
  • Create a borderless Asia enabling peer members to be recognized and celebrated across borders.
  • Provide strong representation for Asia music professionals and students to establish more uniform standards, classifications and certifications across the region.
  • Collaborate with international music organizations to provide expanded global networking and exposure to broader commercial opportunities for our members.
  • Develop an environment for the East and West to collaborate finding new opportunities, new markets, new audiences, and sharing best practices.
  • Encourage leading-edge research and development of Asia music professionals in the areas of science and technologies.
  • Establish an advocacy council to champion meaningful causes of music to people throughout Asia, such as IP protection, minimum fees, and employability.
